JBL ProSilent Safe

The JBL ProSilent Safe is a backflow preventer and protects devices such as diaphragm pumps from returning aquarium water.

The gas exchange in the aquarium mainly takes place via the surface movement of the water, during which atmospheric oxygen is introduced into the aquarium water. However, some factors reduce the oxygen content in the aquarium considerably: rising temperatures, lack of CO2 night switches, medication, and others.
In aquariums with little surface flow, a deficiency can quickly develop. Plant mass is also crucial: even if many plants produce vital oxygen during the day, they also exhale carbon dioxide at night as they do not photosynthesise without light. This is where the use of an air pump can be beneficial in order to avoid unnecessary permanent pH fluctuations overnight, which most fish also have considerable difficulties with. The resulting water movement actively expels the (excess) CO₂ and atmospheric oxygen enters the aquarium water.

In general, all air pumps and compressors should be protected from returning water. The JBL backflow preventer was developed for this purpose, which fits onto 4/6 mm air hoses. This "valve" is simply integrated into the air hose. The arrow on the backflow preventer indicates the direction of installation as seen from the direction of the air pump.

To stop a possible water backflow at an early stage, the non-return valve should always be installed as close as possible to the water surface.

Note: Backflow preventers for air do NOT work with CO₂! The non-return valves for CO₂ are also not suitable for air lines, as the pressure of the air pump is not sufficient to open the CO₂ non-return valve.

Simple installation
The JBL ProSilent Safe backflow preventer is installed in the air-carrying hose between the air pump and the aquarium as close to the water surface as possible.
